Dear Fifth Grade Parents and Guardians,
In this day and age, we all know how important science, engineering, technology and math are to our students. What better way to foster a lifelong love of science than by participating in the First Annual Albert S. Hall School Fifth Grade Science Fair. Your student has two options for participating in Science Fair:
- They can join the Afterschool Science Fair Club and complete their project there. The club will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30PM – 3:30 PM and a late bus will be provided to bring students home. Limited space available; so, return your applications or scan the QR code below to complete form online before spots fill up.
- They can complete their project at home, using the online workbook to guide them through their progress. The workbook can be found on the Waterville Elementary PTA website: WWW.WATERVILLEPTA.ORG
If your student chooses to complete their project at home, you can be a real help and truly enjoy working on a Science Fair project with your student. Don’t worry if you haven’t created a project before – anyone can do it! First, become familiar with the guidelines for the fair. Tape the fact sheet from your packet on your refrigerator for easy reference. Next, allow plenty of time to do the project, at least 4 weeks. Try to set aside time every few days or so for work sessions. Make them short, about 20 minutes, to allow for slow, but steady, progress. This will accommodate a child’s attention span and ensure that each session is pleasant.
Try not to get possessive about the project. Let it end up Looking like exactly what it is the work of a fifth grader learning about something that interests him or her. You will both feel considerable satisfaction when the project is complete. Your student may be asked to explain the project. It is wise to practice this so your student will feel more comfortable. Simply encourage your student to go through the project as if explaining it to someone who knows nothing about it. He or she might begin by telling how he or she became interested in doing this, project, and then simply talk their way through the project step by step.
The Science Fair is NOT mandatory and will not impact student’s grades. For more information, the Waterville Elementary PTA will host a “Parent Information” session on Wednesday, January 22nd from 6:30PM – 7:30 PM in the Hall School Library. We will also offer a Zoom link for those who cannot attend in-person. The link can be found on the PTA website on the calendar page.

If your student would like to participate, please complete/return the attached entry form, or scan the QR code to complete the online form. Do either by Wednesday, February 5th.
